This picture (above) was taken in the 80's when Colin and Al Bye performed together, supporting bands like the Kursaal Flyers in venues across the UK. We also busked for fun on Southend Pier and in the streets of Cambridge.
The AM5
Formerly none as Al Morocco 5
AM5 evolved and I was the second drummer to play the part. I believe the rest of the band were all original members. The bass player left and moved to Wales for a while and join Ground Hogs until he returned to Essex. He was replaced by Michael Balis from Greenwich. My memory isn't the best, but I think he left the band about the same time as the singer (Bradley). This is well we were joined by Barry (vocals and guitar) and Tony (Bass). We kicked around for a couple of years playing locally and Germany. I left after a German tour and Tim (lead guitarist) left a little while after that.
Poster created by Colin Gilbert for Colin and Al Bye
Street Legal
Street Legal comprised of me (Colin Gilbert) and Al (Alan Bye). There was a short period when I had a go at performing guitar and singing to a live audience. After a year of a very hard work trying to remember the lyrics and chords, I chose to give it up and return to drumming where I was comfortable. I loved singing and playing guitar and ukulele, but i wasn't cut out for the performing side of it. I liked writing too, but I didn't have an outlet at that time, so it was some years later that I found a way to express this wanting.
We did get to support the Kursaal Flyers play in the company of some fine artist though. Al and me have played together, on and of ever since and I recorded an album featuring his harmonic. This was done during the Covid days which meant him recording at home and forwarding the file to me to process. The album is called Al & Me, funnily enough.

The Simon Lawrence Band

The Simon Lawrence Band
The Simon Lawrence Band started life as a punk band of which I have totally forgotten the name of, It may come to me later.
There was two guitarists Jake and Miles and Jack on bass, me on drums and Simon Lawrence on vocals. I have no photos of this period, no recordings and as you see, little memory of it. This band fizzled out and then turned to Jazz. We then had a new flutist (Karolina) and just one guitarist as Jake had moved to Brighton. We stayed together long enough to play some pubs and record an album with a friend of mine, Pete Nash (former player with Steve Marriot and Peter Frampton in the 60's). This album is call Streets and Bars and feature lyric by Fran Landesman, a popular jazz lyricist and poet and mother of Miles.
